Los Arribes del Duero, along the River Trail
In the area bordering the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora you will find one of inland Spain's most spectacular landscapes: los Arribes del Duero. Follow the trail marked out by the river canyon and you will discover the area's spectacular beauty. The landscape of this area is dominated by the spectacular canyon carved out over time by the Duero River - the Iberian peninsula's longest and deepest water course. A stunning setting with rugged gorges and canyons, occasionally reaching a depth of 500 metres, running almost one hundred kilometres through the southwest of Zamora and the northwest of Salamanca provinces. Funny how things go in circles. Forty years ago, Spain was the bright young thing in holiday fashion. The first package tours were just taking off, and Brits queued up to buy straw donkeys and eat all-day breakfasts on the Costa del Sol. Inevitably, though, our travel horizons stretched and Spain’s star waned. Well, now we have seen the rest of the world — and decided that Spain was rather special after all. We are visiting in bigger numbers than ever before — it has overtaken France as our No1 holiday destination — and not just for a fortnight on a beach. We’re taking city breaks, spa breaks and walking holidays; we’re visiting vineyards and art galleries, playing golf and learning tennis; and we’re staying in mountain lodges, converted farmhouses and restored fincas. We’re back — and, as savvy 21st-century travellers, we’re discovering exciting new regions of Spain and new ways of exploring them.

Getting into Barcelona at about 9pm I was delighted to find everything still open (in fact most of it seemed to be just getting moving). Spain seems much more easy going than Italy. It is also vastly cheaper. The shops seem more familiar, the layout of the streets is similar to home and the people smile at you occasionally. Pickpocketing is apparently a national sport, however, so I will have to be careful with my money.

Jardín de Cactus
The Cactus Garden is in an old quarry for the extraction of volcanic rock or gravel used by the old prickly pear growers to retain the night-time dampness in the soil. The artist César Manrique could see in this area the opportunity to convert a residual space into a strange terraced enclosure where more than one thousand four hundred species of cactus - all perfectly classified - are cultivated. The whole thing, which has Manrique's unmistakable stamp, is presided over by a windmill which used to be used to grind maize and today works for educational purposes. More about the Jardín de Cactus

A Tour of the Royal Palace of Madrid
"For all eternity" is the inscription on the cornerstone of the Royal Palace, which was laid in 1738. This solemn, monumental building was erected in the centre of Madrid as a symbol of solidity, strength and continuity. Built of granite and limestone, with wood used only in the doors and windows to minimise the risk of fire, it is the official residence of the King and Queen of Spain. Even though the Royal Family do not live there, they do use it for numerous important acts and events. Its architectural beauty, serene and harmonious, is enhanced in an extraordinary way by its setting, which may even be more beautiful than the palace itself. Zoos, safaris, museums, nature trails...Spain has a wide array of leisure and entertainment options for children that goes beyond the big theme parks that have sprung up over the last few years. In the last decade, Spain has seen a significant growth in the number of theme parks, with Terra Mítica in Benidorm, Port Aventura in Tarragona, Isla Mágica in Seville, Warner Bros Park in Madrid. At the same time however, a wide range of leisure activities has also come about, that focus more on contact with the environment and science than tall, twisting roller coasters.
